MT since 1986. Trying to survive the demise of this profession. Have worked for the biggest and the worst, so I was thrilled to be hired in March by a small company, who very rarely hires, is owned by an individual, has only straight typing and pays a good line rate. Was told there was "tons of work" and "new accts" coming and we NEED MTs. I'm on third shift and here I sit, nothing to do, and since the start of this pay period on 5/21, I have a total of 1099 lines. What other profession/job demands a person to be present to cover a shift, yet not get compensated for their time if there is nothing to do? I absolutely must be here when there is work since I cover stats during my shift; yet I'm expected to sit and stare at my monitor when there is nothing and not get compensated for my time. I have worked for so many MTSOs since 2004, it has become ridiculous. (I was with the same company for 17 yrs; acquired by MQ in 1999; I left in 2004.) I was hopeful this was going to be the place for me. I have 13 more years until I can retire. I'm tired of looking for work. At this age, I should be settled in, making a decent wage, able to survive without worry. I have put in the time and sweat over the years. I hate feeling this uncertain about a paycheck and about my future. So I'm off to cruise the job boards yet again. It's beyond ridiculous, really. Did I already say that?
