They turn up their noses because they don't want to discipline themselves.
Getting into debt is easy. Getting out is very hard. Not getting into debt in the first place is usually avoidable if you live within your means.
It all sounds "old fashioned," but you really don't need expensive clothes, expensive shoes or expensive electronics.
