doing this type of transcription? If you are fairly new at it, you will likely get better at it as you train your ear to the material.

When transcribing any kind of conversation generated by random people (as opposed to professionals dictating specific information within expected limitations), one needs to learn to anticipate what is going to be said. That doesn't mean you need to be able to read minds, it just means you need to be aware of the kinds of words and phrases you would expect to hear following or surrounding certain other words and phrases. Within the context of the conversation or interview, there will be words, topics, and phrases that will be more likely to appear. By anticipating what you will hear, you will eventually be able to hear faint or garbled words the first time or with very little repetition because you will have anticipated what the word should be.

When first learning to do this type of transcription, it can sometimes seem like listening to a collection of random sounds, but as you have learned, when you go back over it again, you are able to pick up things you missed before. It will get easier as you do more. You will also learn to hold the garbles in your memory as you listen to the rest of the interview in the event that the word is repeated in a different context or is spoken more clearly. That will save you a lot of time because you can then just go back to the blank and fill it in.
