So, they are laying people off right and left, seems like every quarter now, and they expect people to invest in a new system? Are they going to ask all their IC contractors to do the same? Somehow I don't see people willing to pay (or can afford to) for an upgrade or a new computer let alone another version of Word, especially when being paid that stellar rate of 3 cpl. If they want people to upgrade, they can pay for it. Even if this were true and you upgrade, what's to stop them from laying off in a few months?
