Little things drive me crazy - OldMT Posted: May 14th, 2018 - 6:47 pm
We just had a required refresher course in English Usage and Proofreading (everybody had to take it...including the "oldies)...and this was on the assessment quiz: Question..."The flowers were _____ on the table." Lying/laying...I chose "lying"..it was dinged incorrect, and the host on the training video said, "Remember: Persons lie, but objects lay.: Wrong! Laying would require a direct object......I brought this to the attention of my supervisor, and she agreed with the video!!...she said "someone had to put the flowers there, so it is 'lay' ." ??? I see what she means but it is not what the sentence says....I can lay the flowers on the table, but they lie there...she would not agree with me, so I let it go, but it bugged me....therefore, this vent!
