Asking to be laid off? - Frustrated MT

I'm currently working as an MT for a company where I have very little to no work. Many other coworkers have already been laid off or their hours have been cut from full time to part time. I'm still full time but am not able to get my full 40 hours in because there is no work. I'm making minimum wage or less. My question is, should I asked to be laid off? Is that a no-no?
