This dictator must have been trained in the South. It is vernacular for residents who have not been circulating in the wards for very long. They are "dry", i.e., their "ears haven't gotten wet yet". In this sense, he is training the residents during Grand Rounds, wanting to know their opinion on a complex medical case that's being presented to the residents to obtain their opinion - not for the purpose of his own self-edification (or hers!), but for the purpose of trying to get a feel for where they stand in terms of their understanding of the case they are being presented with during Grand Rounds, what materials he is going to have to teach them, what he is going to have to emphasize, what he may need to de-emphasize, special materials he may need to introduce into the curriculum that may not have been mentioned in the beginning of the tutorial, etc. It's a very cherry pie, "old boy" way of doing it, I know, but that's the way it goes at Emory, U, Florida, Harkness, . Hope this helps :)
