You can begin collecting social security benefits at age 62, with a limit to how much you can earn before losing any benefits. If you were married for a minimum time (I think it is 10 years) to a spouse who is deceased, you can begin collecting survivor SS benefits at age 60 on the spouse's account.

I was widowed, collected survivor benefits at age 60, switched to my own SS account at age 66 with an increase in benefits I now receive from what I received as a survivor.
