I live in the desert and do the same thing every year with the AC, trying to keep the bill down.
In the winter I never run the heat. To bed I wear a Sofa Sack (called a Couch Sack by some retailers), a fleece sleeping thingy with ribbed bands at the ankles. Unlike pajamas/gown, there is no air circulating around your legs. I find it to be more comfortable than sweat pants. (One of Oprah's Favorite Things many years ago.) I wear it with fleece socks. Best thing I ever bought!! I have given several as gifts; everyone loves them.
I know how difficult it is because I am in the same (frugal) boat.
You should be so proud of your son and his accomplishments as well as your own!
