What do you think hospitals were pre 1990s -- charities?

No, PHYSICIANS owned most of the hospitals in the 70s and 80s. Now megacorporations own most hospitals. (There are still a few charity hospitals run by [state] government left, and you are lucky to make it out of one of those alive.)
