People who want to stay home with kids, parents, husbands, etc., are willing to accept these kind of wages as opposed to commuting and driving.
The worst thing that ever happened to this profession was when courses were offered online and it was sold as a fabulous "mommy" job.
It ruined MT and created a saturated market of unskilled newbs, who then accepted the lowest line rates in the history of this profession, rates of which remain intact today.
We have a market of now unemployed MTs and the MTSOs are taking advantage.
One day (soon I think), there will not be a pool of qualified MTs anymore and the tables will turn and wages will rise. The MTs who will survive this are trained, well versed in multiple specialties and document types, are efficient in both editing and transcribing, fast in both, and willing to work full time and commit to a certain number of minutes/hours per day (not part time or when they're available).
