I would encourage techies being laid off to check with their unemployment office. As a prior corporate employee, when I was laid off they said my severance could not be considered as income since there were "conditions" (there was a no compete clause). Also, don't forget about TAA benefits if interested in school. Claim W85-858. Reynola in the Atlana office can share details with local unemployment office if needed (since Nuance has refused to provide any names of affected employees as requested).
