I went to CareerStep. It took me about 4 years but that was mainly due to my health and that I worked at a slower pace. I had financial aid that helped. The course was worth it because I learned more than anatomy, speed, etc. It taught me skills I can use elsewhere. I am not certified but I have working with MM for over a year now. I started out positive and hopeful. I slowly became more anxious and beat down. I cannot get another job right now due to my health. I cannot lose this job. I live with my mother because there is no way I can afford to live on my own and pay bills with what I make. I work full time. Even though my stats are good, I have been performance-managed at least once and looking at another one. I am micromanaged. The work emails are hostile. I have met good managers but they also trade me back to others.
If your friend has a family to support, she should look into other virtual jobs. Look at freelancing various skills...tutoring, virtual assistant, etc. Amazon is hiring for virtual work...not sure what but it's worth a shot. If she's a writer, freelancing is always there. She should get out there and see what is available virtually that would fit her current skillset. There is a lot out there.
Good luck.
