agency in Los Angeles. Got a call to work at Disney Studios as a vacation fill-in for a general secretary in the animation dept. The agency paid you more based on your skills. Although I could run a 10-key with ease and do very basic tasks with it, I was NOT a full-fledged bookkeeping specialist. I guess Disney thought that all 10-key uses were bookkeepers, and tried to save money by asking for a 10-key person instead of a real bookkeeper. Meanwhile, I'd been told by the agency that it was mainly a typing position. After 3 very interesting days at the movie lot site, but also of major frustration on my part because I didn't understand what they were telling me to do, I asked, "So when does the typing part of the job start?" They said "There's no typing in this job." THAT'S when we finally compared notes and realized that I wasn't the person they needed for the job.
It was disappointing, because the studio was an amazing place to be. One day I ate lunch in the cafeteria, and saw Eva Gabor, who'd been doing the voice-overs for an animiated feature that was in production. Another day, the person that was training me and I ate sack lunches out on one of the movie sets, in a Western town. I sure did wish I had been a real bookkeeper, because I loved it there!
