and trying to say refracticity, like authentic/authenticity, ethnic/ethnicity. If you're on a verbatim account, I'd leave it as refracticity, as the meaning of what he's saying would be somewhat clear; but if you are allowed to recast the sentence, I'd say (a little differently than you stated) progress to becoming refractory. Of course, all this depends on what you're allowed by your MTSO to do.
