I have an old version of Word (2003). On the Tools dropdown, you can click on Word Count and choose characters with or without spaces, words, lines, etc. You would probably have to copy and paste your completed chart into Word and use their tool to determine the words. If you want to count characters with spaces, just click on that one in the Tools/Word Count menu. I don't know where it is in newer versions of Word but I'm sure it's there somewhere.
