It seems they can make any mistake they want and as long as they tell you, they have proof they notified you and if you cash that check and any after that, you have accepted the payment. You are SOOOO correct that they have no idea what they are doing, but unfortunately stupidity and incompetence and no sense of fair practice is not illegal. BUT filing, making your voice heard and making them hire an attorney to defend is certainly an option ;) Maybe if enough claims are filed, someone will take notice.
