We have always had email to deal with. It's just that we used to be well enough compensated that it didn't matter that much if you had to spend 10 minutes on it. Just like it didn't matter that much if it took 3 minutes to research a term. Or you had to spend twice as much time on an ESL report. Or typing in cc's. You were getting paid 40k to 45k a year, even 35k a year still a decade ago, either by the line or salary, and all of the headaches and frustrations were fairly well compensated.

If we are no longer thrilled about having to read email on our time, or deal with endless ESLs, or research blanks, it's because we are already being paid so little, expecting us to do that with no additional compensation is adding to insult to injury.
