I'm retiring in less than 2 years, but a friend of mine with college degree and used to be an MT, became an elder companion last year. She works 48 hours then has 4 days off (she rotates with 2 other women). She goes everywhere with her including restaurants, movies, and that is all paid for outside of her salary, which ended up being $22,000 for 5 months. It's not for someone who has children at home or otherwise can't do it and you don't have to be a CNA. A lot of people just do not want to be alone and don't have family and aren't ready for nursing homes.
