Maybe you could try to get your foot in the door in a medical records department at a hospital and work your way into coding, or a job doing billing at a doctor's office, but there are very few employers who offer on the job training and won't hire anyone without experience and credentials, there is too much chance of being audited and even unintentional errors are a problem. If you attend a program, I think some of them offer internships. I have not heard anything about coding going down the drain. There are several choices for schools, AAPC, AHIMA, Career Step and Andrews to name a few.
