Previous experience as an IC, I found the work sporadic. Employer did not keep me in the loop when docs would be on vacation and had a tendency to dump a lot of work on me at about 5 pm on Friday afternoon. Watch out for this.
If IC, make sure to do the maximum social security contributions and use your IRA to your advantage also. I had a couple of years as a business owner where I had a very small profit and did not contribute as much to SS. You will feel it later in life when you are looking at retirement.
Sorry, I cannot help you out on the characters per line because it seems that there are often stipulations about headers, demographics, etc. If you have a set number of doctors and are not doing hospital systems where there is a potential of thousands of docs, you can really boost the line count with expanders and macros.
