I've done some research (even though I didn't follow through), and I think you should think about the course that AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) teaches. That organization is a medical coding certification body (like AAPC) but focuses more on teaching hospital coding - where, as best I can tell, the pay is better. It makes sense to me to take courses from the entity that would certify you. It's not cheap, but it's not outrageous either, and you can take the coursework part time if you need to,
