I have a tax question. I'm lost. Regarding IC (sm) - nm

I am going to accept a position as an IC.  Exactly what do I have to do?  My husband and I are both retired, file jointly, and I want to work part time as an MT.  I can't get the IRS on the phone.  What exactly do I need to do after I accept this position?  I know that I must file estimated taxes quarterly, but how do I find out how much to pay?
