The end of the big companies that are using MTs to conceal the lie that VR works can't keep it up forever.
Nuance recently admitted they were paying too much for their MT staff and while that is obnoxious, it is true. They NEVER anticipated having an MT staff after we trained VR! We were supposed to be extinct long ago! They are bleeding money trying to keep the lie going as long as they can.
As for MM Fluency, it was never a sound software to begin with and it never has been able to deal with the variables that the job deals with. Not only that, but to save money the IT was shipped overseas. That is another indication that the end is near. Any time you see a company grasping at risky cost-cutting measures (ie.outsourcing), it is a sure sign that all is NOT WELL.
I am convinced that when all they have left with is an overseas staff, a gigantic error rate, people breathing fire because of HIPPA, and doctors that are po'd and paranoid about lawsuits,that they will grab whatever revenue was left in the company and disappear. That is what frauds and scam artists do. All those managers that made our lives hell will be in the cold too. If anyone in these companies believes that they are appreciated more than the $$$ then they are delusional. Only the few at the top will come out of this mess without scars and they will already have been looking at their next big score. But as long as they are out of MT business the industry can start to recover.
These VR companies NEVER revolutionized nor were they anywhere close to cutting edge about anything. The software and VR NEVER WORKED FOR MT PURPOSES!!! But the promises were rolled out prematurely because the big companies were so intent on being the first to grab market share that they sold a product that didn't live up to promises and then systematically built layers of lies and underpaid employees to conceal that fact. Medical transcribing never changed or went away. It is just purposely hidden. We are called editors to disguise the truth that we are still doing the SAME JOB, but under horrible working conditions with a software that works against us in terms of productivity and accuracy.
Indicators are that these companies are not doing well. A decade is a long time to most of us but for large companies, it can take them that long or longer to fully run themselves into the red. To use the drain analogy, they are getting closer to the the pull of the drain and it is getting stronger at a faster rate. I think we will see something happening soon.
