Bought and downloaded Word 2010 - Now cannot type in gmail

I can type forever in any application on my desktop except gmail. I am able to type a few words and then the keyboard becomes completely disabled. I have to use the mouse in order to make the cursor appear and then can type a few words again before the keyboard becomes disabled again.
Has this happened to anyone? If so, do you know how to fix it? Thank you.
