I thought that when you said you needed an adapter. I have used a USB adapter with the old pin type of plug and they work fine. Just make sure it is compatible. They don't always work especially if your keyboard is an older model. Newegg sells one that is compatible with most older keyboards. But a standard adapter should work. Good luck.
I completely get it. If I had to work on a laptop keyboard I would go nuts.
