I'm not sure what you would consider "recently," but I took it about 5 years ago. I was offered to take the beta version of the test when they were experimenting with the on-line test.

The test I took lasted about 3 hours, if I remember correctly. When I took the test, I had been a transcriptionist for 25 years and didn't study at all. I figured if I didn't know it by then, I didn't have a shot anyway.

I was surprised how many unrelated questions there were, i.e., medical corporation acronyms and information on pharmaceutical companies. The purpose of the "beta" test was to weed out some of those questions which I would assume very few knew.

There was a portion of the test where you actually transcribe a dictation, but it was extremely easy. There was also a grammar portion (multiple choice), which I also found easy.

I would say there were approximately 400 questions, of which 30-40 I had no idea and guessed.

I want to say there were 300 people taking the test and 20 people were either certified or registered. That doesn't sound like many, but since it was a "test run" there were a lot of students taking it. I found that most of the questions dealt with things you've probably learned through repetition, not through studying. I was one of the ones certified. If I had to guess, I would say those who passed did so through experience, not study material they paid for.

It's no longer CMT. They call it CHDS, Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialist. I guess that sounds more worth the money you have to pay to take the test and renew every 3 years.

Good luck! I'm sure you will do fine. Just don't overthink it :)
