Regarding the EPIC posts below, and another post mentioning MT will still be needed in the future, please consider Scribes - Overseas companies are VERY aggressively already making these transitions to scribes, US MTs can even get hired for these companies, but the pay is 8 to 10 dollars an hour, no benefits, etc.
From what I can garner, AHIMA is involved, and it would seem they are helping the overseas MTs transition to scribes.
If you are considering being a scribe (not only transcription, but also some coding and pulling in lab results and templates from a database) please consider unionizing or doing something to protect your jobs here in the US.
Research online, look for virtual scribe jobs, you will get the gist of what is going to happen. Basically, MT going to 8 to 10 dollars an hour with no benefits - (which most is anyway) but it is a way to stay in the profession and actually a great idea, but the pay is very low because of outside (overseas) aggression.
