the doctor is pronouncing centimeters in the French manner, which is what many of them were (and still are) taught to do.
He is not saying "sonometers," he is saying "centimeters," and he is not mispronouncing it, he is expanding your horizons by using an alternate but still perfectly acceptable pronunciation.
