Typing Speed vs. Transcription Speed - Two different things

Posted: Feb 7th, 2016 - 9:45 am In Reply to: You average typing speed? - Linda

Note that typing speed is different from transcription speed. I have no clue what my transcription speed is in terms of WPM, but my typing speed is approximately 80 words per minute. You can't use a regular WPM clock for transcription speed, because it's not a true reading of your typing ability.

Note that fast typing certainly helps in transcription, so it's not irrelevant in that regard.

A lot of knowledge and experience with different dictation styles/ESLs is what helps transcription speed. SO, if someone only types 60 WPM in a typing test, but they have a lot of knowledge and experience, then they will have a higher transcription speed than someone who types 80, even 100 WPM, in a typing test.

So, it's kind of a moot issue, actually, since it all boils down to how much you can produce, not how fast your fingers alone can produce it.
