...many companies will hire temps permanently after having had a chance to see their work. This is called "temp-to-perm" and it benefits both the employee and the employer - a low-risk opportunity for both to see whether the job is a good fit before making a long-term commitment.
I worked as a placement counselor for a temp agency in Silicon Valley and many of our people were hired permanently after 60 or 90 days in a temp position. We had others who worked in the same "temp" position more or less permanently; we were technically the employer, but were really just acting more or less as a payroll agent.
Of course, we did also have jobs that were strictly short-term - a week, 2 weeks or maybe a month - but we usually knew which jobs had the potential for permanent employment and which ones did not. We would ask about this when the job order was placed, and we would also ask applicants whether they were looking for something long-term. Some people don't want to work in the same job for very long and others didn't want very transient employment, so we tried to match them up.
