The only difference is.... - IC vs employee

Posted: Nov 14th, 2015 - 7:31 pm In Reply to: What is the tax difference between IC and employee? - Linda

As an employee your employer pays 1/2 of your SS taxes and takes your 1/2 out of your check for you and sends it in, 15.3% total. As an IC you pay both halves of your SS tax. 15.3% total. So as IC you are paying 7.65% more than if employee. So you should ask for 7.65% more as an IC than an employee. If 8 cpl as employee, it should be 8.6 cpl which is 7.65% more for IC. All the other taxes are the same unless you have state taxes or something. We all have to pay our own income taxes regardless if employee or IC. You don't need to file quarterly when IC if you have someone else sending in enough money to the IRS to cover your half of the SS taxes. If you have hubby, etc, just have a little more taken out of their check to cover your 1/2 of SS taxes. Hope this helps.
