Seems to be some confusion in wording on this thread. You always have to pay taxes, but as employee, the employer takes them out for you. Employer does not PAY your taxes. Yes, SS is automatically taken out on the employer end. You don't need to file a 1099. However, you do need to decide how to file. I am married, but file single, and W4 is joint.

As IC, you have to do your own "taking out."
