I also found the DIY FTP intimidating. I have used Filezilla more than once when it was provided for me by someone else's account and now I'm comfortable with it.
When I had an old school doc who I needed to transfer audio files with I ended up choosing ExaVault. For just a few users I think I paid about $8/month (paid quarterly). I was able to get him to understand how to use it after a few dry runs. Not too hard to find your way around even if your computer skills are average. And they had good (fast) support staff which I appreciated. I know they had a free trial option when I used them, probably they still do.
There are too many fee sites out there, I sifted through quite a few before I chose ExaVault. So if you feel like shopping around you'll have lots of options.
