I hadn't thought of the strategy of just not asking... - rain

That's not a bad idea. Might be better to just deal with any fallout that happens. I am on good terms with the company, and the owners are fantastic people, but it still doesn't feel right asking at this point. I can always tell them post-interview if I think they might actually be contacted.

The application does ask if they may contact current supervisor, but there's a separate list of the required references on which I'm not supposed to re-list anybody previously named. That really cuts down on who I can even think to use as a reference at all. The pitfalls of training AND working remotely in isolation!
