If you receive a 1099 that also goes to the IRS. If they just pay you by check and no 1099 I don't think there is any way they can be aware of that. it's the 1099 that makes your income apparent to them. But for honesty sake, I guess you should report all income, although the taxes on IC are very, very burdensome.
