Most MTSOs pay QA by the hour but even that is changing with the switch - to more and more VR work

I have done MT (Transcription) and QA (Quality Assurance), but not ME (Editing of VR).  As far as I can see, the difference between Editing VR and doing QA is that you get stuck on QA filling in all the blanks that other MTs have no clue what the heck the mumble-mouth is trying to spit out.

QA, at most MTSOs, are paid per hour, which is good if you have experienced MTs who seldom have blanks in their reports.

Like anything else in the Medical Transcription world, it really depends on the company you work for.

If you end up QAing brand new or inexperienced ESL MTs, you end up re-typing the whole report anyway, and then you have to be sure you do it 100% correct because al l your changes are shown on the corrected copy that the MT uses to learn from.  You have to know every nuance of the Account Specifics for each client so that you can tell the MT/ME what they are doing wrong.  You have to know grammar, punctuation, etc so you can tell the MT/ME what they are doing wrong.  Most MTs/MEs dislike QAs and you really have to have a thick skin to ignore all the nasty comments on sites like this.

Also, some small MTSOs use QA as back-up MTs.  If  MTs or MEs call in sick, they ask the QA people to transcribe if TAT is an issue.  If it is a small MTSO with only enough QAs to fill each shift, if anyone QA needs time off, you end up filling in.  I have never known a QA for a small MTSO who does not work 50 to 60 hours per week, every week, because of one emergency or another.  QA may save your hands, but it kills your back and brain , not to mention your social/family time.

Before everyone jumps on me, that is just the worst-case scenario.  You could end up with a great MTSO and great MTs, but from the comments I have read on this site, QAs usually get the raw end of the deal.

Only way to find out for sure is to try it for awhile before you leave your present job to see if you like QA.

 Good luck on your search.
