Divided country - OHMT

I don't know about Dems. They say the last true Dem was JFK but I've read a fair amount about his presidency, the Bay of Pigs fiasco, he couldn't get along with Congress, and things just weren't going very well during his aborted presidency. I wasn't alive at the time. All I know is the multitude of reading I've done on the subject. Regardless, it's a tragedy the way his life ended.

I can speak for republicans, a lot of them who like to call themselves "conservatives". Our party has lost their way and it's their own fault they got the crap beaten out of them in the last election.

I was 9 when Carter ran for office and by the time his term ended, I was a full-blooded republican. I grew up a Reagan Republican. It's a shame a lot of our party has lost its way since Reagan left office.

Some of my key conservative beliefs:

1. Smaller government.
2. Less government spending.
3. Less taxes.
4. The government works for us, not the other way around.
5. I'd like to believe in an honest government - you know - one where they all pay their taxes and follow the law.

I'll borrow a couple of conservative principles from Anthony Martin:

1. 'Government money' does not belong to government. It belongs to the taxpayers who worked hard for it, and who had funds deleted from their paychecks even before they got to see them.
2. Government social programs reward pathological dependency. True adults, unless hindered by debilitating physical impairment (my comment - we have truly disabled people out there and they MUST be taken care of by our gov't), seek independent living as free persons who are not stuck in an infantile dependency on the government nanny. (My commment - yeah, they provide WIC, food staples and a measley amount of money plus government housing and look at such housing - it's disgusting. I've seen military housing just as bad. It's a disgrace - which is why we never lived on base).
3. Human rights are not granted by government. They are inherent and automatic. We are 'endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights.' Government can only choose to recognize and protect those inherent rights.
4. The right to self-defense, as encapsulated in the 2nd Amendment, is the key to all of the other rights described in the Bill of Rights. Free speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, and a free press are secured and kept secure by an armed citizenry. (My commment - No "Fairness Doctrine" crap. If you're going to impose that and try to get conservatives off of talk radio, you'd best take a good look at television stations and the unfair balance there).

And a couple from Russell Kirk:

1. The conservative believes that there exists an enduring moral order. That order is made for man, and man is made for it: human nature is a constant, and moral truths are permanent. (When I think of our society, often the words "moral decay" come to mind. I'm not perfect in any sense but our country's morals seem to get worse and worse every year).
2. Conservatives uphold voluntary community, quite as they oppose involuntary collectivism.

It goes way deeper than that. I can only hope that my party has opened its eyes and see how far they have gone from what they are supposed to stand for.

A good friend of ours from the Navy wrote a book called The Conservative Manifesto. I actually found a link to it. It's a short soft cover book and worth the read. It's written by Bill Hennessey. I cannot locate our autographed copy so I'm going to get another. He and his wife, Julie, were good friends of ours. They had 4 beautiful children, 1 girl, 3 boys. After they left the navy, the girl developed diabetes, and one morning she got up to get a bath. She was around age 6. She went into a diabetic coma in the bathtub and drowned. Tragic event for one of the best families I've ever known.

Anyway, here's the link if you're interested:

When Obama was elected, I wanted to see him succeed because if the economy succeeds, I succeed. But his outrageous spending has done nothing but disgust me. Pelosi needs to take the first bus out of Washington.

I can't comment much on the dem party but I know they weren't always the libs they are now.
